Frequently Asked Questions

Not sure what to expect? You’re not alone. Here are the questions I get most often — from first-time authors to small publishers.

General Editing Questions

What’s the difference between proofreading, copyediting, and line editing?
→ Great question — and it’s why I spell out the differences in the Services & Pricing Guide. Briefly:

  • Proofreading is the final check for spelling, grammar, typos, and formatting before publication.

  • Copyediting focuses on grammar, punctuation, and consistency.

  • Line editing zooms in at the sentence level to refine clarity, rhythm, and style — it’s about how your words sound on the page.

What’s a manuscript evaluation?

→ A manuscript evaluation is a high-level review of your book — I don’t make any direct edits to the file. Instead, I’ll provide an editorial letter with honest feedback on structure, pacing, character development, and more. It’s perfect if you know your draft needs work but aren’t sure where to start.

What is developmental editing?
→ Developmental editing is hands-on feedback that helps you revise the big-picture elements of your manuscript. I’ll focus on structure, clarity, voice, plot, pacing, character development, and theme. This includes tracked suggestions in your manuscript and detailed comments, often across multiple passes. It’s ideal for early to mid-stage drafts.

How do I know which service is right for my book?
→ That’s what the free sample edit, and 15-minute consult are for! I’ll take a look and help you choose the best fit based on your manuscript, goals, and experience level.

What genres do you work with?
→ I specialize in memoir, personal narrative, literary fiction, women’s fiction, YA, Christian nonfiction, devotionals, and hybrid genres. If your genre isn’t listed, feel free to reach out — if I’m not the right fit, I’ll try to refer you to someone who is.

Working Together

What’s your process like?
→ Once we agree on the service that fits your needs, I’ll send over an editing agreement and invoice. A 50% deposit secures your spot. After that, you’ll send me your manuscript, and I’ll give you a timeline for delivery. I provide clear communication, tracked edits, and thoughtful, honest feedback — every step of the way.

Do I have to follow all your editing suggestions?
→ Not at all. This is your book, and every decision is yours to make. My edits come with context, encouragement, and options — I explain the “why” behind every suggestion so you can make confident choices.

Do you work with first-time authors or new writers?
→ Absolutely. In fact, many of my clients are writing their first book. I specialize in helping new writers feel seen, supported, and confident as they grow.

Can I ask questions during the editing process?
→ Yes, and I encourage it. I’m here to collaborate, not just correct. Whether you need clarification on feedback or want to talk through a revision, you’re never bothering me.

Do you work with self-publishing authors?
→ I do! Most of my clients are indie or self-publishing authors. I’ll help you make your book the best it can be — whether you’re querying, uploading to Amazon, or printing copies for your community.

Pricing & Logistics

How is pricing calculated?
→ I use transparent, flat-rate pricing based on word count and service level. You can view the full breakdown on my [Services & Pricing Guide]. No hourly surprises — just clear, upfront rates.

Do you offer payment plans?
→ Yes. Most projects are split into two payments: 50% upfront to reserve your spot, and the remaining balance when I return your edits. For larger projects, I’m happy to explore flexible options — just ask.

What file types do you accept?
→ I work in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) using tracked changes. If you use Google Docs or Apple Pages, I can accommodate that too — just let me know your preference.

How long will my edit take?
→ Turnaround times vary depending on the service and word count, but most projects are completed in 2–4 weeks. I’ll give you a specific timeline before we begin, and I always communicate if anything shifts.

Can I book in advance?
→ Yes! I often book projects 2–4 weeks out. If you have a deadline or launch date in mind, it’s best to get on the calendar early.

What if I need help after the edit?
→ I’m still here. Many clients follow up with additional questions, second-round edits, or coaching sessions — you’re always welcome to reach back out.
